Overview

Starting POINTS for Parents is an interactive online community for parents of children with disabilities Providing Opportunities for Information Networking, Training and Support as they learn, share and connect about how to support the educational and developmental needs of their children.  Starting POINTS offers parents, educators and other advocates for children with disabilities a wide variety of tools and resources.  As a safeguard for community members, user-registration is required before users may access some of the interactive options available on the site.

Benefits

By registering with Starting POINTS for Parents, users become members of the Starting POINTS community.  In addition to being able to obtain information from the site (a resource available to all users, registered and non-registered), community members can also:

  • Share information, such as resources, with others by posting content in our Parent Perspectives Forum
  • Respond to content posted by others in the Forum
  • Comment on articles posted by our staff
  • Rate and access our resources through a rating process
  • Receive e-mail notices about upcoming Parent Information Center events and e-newsletters (may opt out of this)

Community Member Agreement

By registering with the Starting POINTS website, you are agreeing that you have read and agree to abide by our Privacy Policy and our Forum Posting Policy. Any community member who violates these policies may have their content edited and/or removed.  If the Parent Information Center determines it is appropriate, they will issue a warning to the community member.  Serious, multiple and/or purposeful violations may result in the user’s registration being moderated, limited or suspended for a period of time or terminated.

History

Parents of children with disabilities have a passion for obtaining the information they need to support their children’s learning and improve their educational outcomes, and then for sharing that information with others.  Starting POINTS for Parents is designed to assist parents and others both give and receive information and support related to meeting the educational and developmental needs of their children with disabilities. 

Starting POINTS for Parents was a concept of the Parent Information Center of NH and the Maine Parent Federation.  The site was developed as a resource for Parent Centers thanks to support and funding accessed by the North East Parent Center Assistance and Collaboration Team, a project of the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network, NJ from the Office of Special Education Programs, Grant XXX.
