The purpose of the conference is to discuss a complaint that New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) and Advocates for Children (AFC) will file with the Office of Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education (DOE).  The complaint is on behalf of limited English Proficient parents whose rights are being violated because they are not getting translated documents and interpreters from the DOE in order to participate in developing their children’s special education programs.

Our NYC Schools have gotten a new chancellor, and like most parents I’m sure I cannot say for sure whether this will be a good thing for our students.  I would like to be optimistic and say that in some ways changes can be good. Read more »

Sometimes parents call me feeling frustrated because  they have just had an IEP meeting and they felt as though the school has made up their minds on what service they are going to give that particular child and are not willing to look at other options and push what the school wants, disregarding what the parent is feelings.
